Thanks for putting this out there. I've had a similar idea before - A Human Agreement. Base level stuff that needs to be agreed upon before we can really grow together towards a sustainable tomorrow. Nonviolence, food, shelter, freedom over our bodies. I see it as a brand. People would sign on, and then use a badge to show the world that they are on board. A link on a website, a logo on a product's package, a sticker on a car. We'd quickly see that WE are no a minority, but in fact a diverse yet united whole. We can revel in our independence and uniqueness while simultaneously honoring the Other. Live and let live.

The time for the human race to evolve past the "migh makes right" stage is NOW. If individuals, world wide, were to use the same methods for settling problems that governments currently do, we would destroy ourselves. Why can't governments recover from sick, criminal behaviours?

I don't understand the concept of war since we all live on this spaceship called Mother Earth. Passengers on the same plane recognize the necessity of getting along with each because their very lives depend on it. Isn't our planet just a bigger version of this concept. We need people with vision who can lead us into the new era of Love.

Paul McCarthy   June 21, 2009 (Cary, NC, United States)

As much as I'd like to see our leaders put an end to destructive conflict, what incentives can we offer those countries with military and economic advantages to sacrifice those advantages? If human survival is suggested as an incentive, well then, might survival be just as important for those with proportionally fewer resources as those with greater resources? Who doesn't wish to continue living? Besides, how can human survival be a concern here unless inequalities, injustices, and other perceived wrongs are deemed intolerable by some? But aren't those just some of the things we're saying we want to change here through this petition? So, what then is the threat to human survival? Is it the mere existence of certain hierarchies, or is it the lack of acceptance of the inevitability of the development of those hierarchies?

Paul,

Thank you for your thoughtful comments regarding our website. First, I'm glad to hear that you would also like to see an end to destructive conflict. Regarding the incentives: I suspect a similar question came up when we had thirteen sovereign States trying to figure out how to get along. Our Founding Fathers came up with their solution. I trust we have the intellectual capacity to follow their lead and create our solution to the "advantage disparity" issue.

Regarding human survival and the ownership of resources: The current threats to our survival: pollution, global warming, the proliferation of weaponry, pandemics and civil unrest are all problems with out passports, paying no attention to who does or who doesn't have access to resources. I think the concern for human survival is beginning to penetrate the "minds of the masses". Global communications have made us all eyewitnesses to the global nature of the inequalities and injustices associated with human activity and the ranks of those finding our current circumstances "intolerable" is growing.

To me the real threat to human survival is our inability to see the limitations of our capacity to dominate one another using our weaponry and our in ability to see the limitations of our ability to dominate the environment using our cleverness.

Once again thank you for taking the time to add your comments to the website. I hope my response has helped clarify the thinking that led to the development of the site in the first place.

Bob

We need sustainable resources on a global level. This cannot be accomplished without cooperation from everyone; this includes not only the individual but also the regional, the national, and the international levels.

Jodi Scholes   May 20, 2009 (Reston, VA, USA)

When we ask the right questions, the answers appear. I love the question, 'What are our common long term goals for ourselves(the human race)...and how are we going to achieve them?' Seems simple, except the perspective is unique. Thanks to Global Summit for driving the concept of a global cease-fire. Peace is possible.

Joel Brown   May 18, 2009 (Oakton, VA, USA)

The timing for this is perfect, as I have just finished reading what I believe is the most important book out there, which I'd recommend to everybody: "Hot, Flat, and Crowded" by Thomas Friedman.

Stefani Olsen   May 03, 2009 (Silver Spring, MD, USA)

Recognizing the shared humanity of people all across the globe is an important step in finding the will to cease war. The environmental problems we face today have taught us that political boundaries are an illusion -- pollution that occurs in one part of the world affects our whole ecosystem. The same is true of human conflict. Now is the time to recognize our common humanity and come together to solve the problems that face us all.

Cary Kamarat   April 12, 2009 (Washington, DC, USA)

The message is both important and pragmatic. I know of so many people who are already "with you" on this. A good resource for furthering the concept of "an intelligent alternative to weaponry for settling our disputes" may be found at brahmakumariswdc@aol.com Let me know how I can help.

Damon Wood   April 06, 2009 (Kennesaw, GA, USA)

Peace, sustainability and human caring simply must be common goals of each society on this Earth. A Global Summit to address these issues and a global cease-fire must be achieved as soon as possible. Sign the petition. Spread the word. Help us work toward this common goal.

Dan Kolansky   April 06, 2009 (Centreville, VA, United States of America)

Its about being honorable and holding ourselves to a higher standard.

Claire Liston   April 06, 2009 (Alexandria, VA, USA)

Why doesn't political science progress the way other sciences do? In scientific fields, experts admit that the truth as they know it will change when someone proves their theory true. Thus, the average citizen is willing to believe that someone may soon prove the existence of a smaller particle, a new species, or life on other planets"yet we can't seem to believe that humans can exist without killing one another. Why? Is it because the "˜experts' aren't trying to prove that it can be done? In most sciences, the scientists challenge themselves to consider a new reality and then set about trying to prove or disprove their theories. Do political scientists consider a world where disputes are settled non-violently? I'd hate to think that this is the one kind of research that isn't being funded.

Carla Barzetti   March 20, 2009 (Washington, DC, USA)

I remember a line in a famous Peter Tosh song: "Everyone is crying out for peace, yes, but none of them is crying out for justice...we need equal rights, and justice..." Everyone needs to be heard. Once all the voices possible can be heard, then we can collectively come up with solutions to problems that will satisfy as many people as possible. Also, when people are able to hear the needs of others, sometimes they realize that what they thought they wanted or needed is not as important as they originally believed. When people work TOGETHER, the soul says "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH". I truly believe that once this gets going, the souls of everyone will be so much more content, that it will become the way, with no looking back. Once you start feeling peace in your soul, it makes you want more of the same. This is more than an idea, or a way to try to accomplish things. This is a real shot at world peace. It IS possible, & the more people believing that & feeding that as a vision, the more of a reality it becomes.

Lyn Vencus   March 17, 2009 (Washington, DC, USA)

I work with kids in the DC public schools and have three grandchildren of my own. The most empowering thing I have done for ALL the world's children is to sign my name to this petition. I urge everyone to exercise their right and responsibility to stand up against human suffering and the atrocities of war. Do it for them, do it for yourself.
