Frequently Asked Questions About this Citizen's Effort
We've had hundreds of summits, and several are already scheduled, why do we need another one?
The summits we've held in the past were, and the ones we have scheduled will be, guided by making our short term national interest our primary concern and our long term global interests, secondary. For this summit, the long term health of the entire human family is our primary concern and our short term national interests are secondary.
I'm just one person. What can I possibly do?
The individual citizens behind this effort understand the limitations of individual action. We also understand the power of numbers. We created this website to give you the opportunity to overcome the "I'm just one person" argument by adding your name to the growing list of citizens that want to see our leaders cooperate as equals on the problems confronting our generation.
In a world so divided, how can we possibly expect anyone to agree on our common long term goals?
The world is certainly diverse, but that does not mean we don't share any common, long term goals. Our representatives at the summit may come up with a few of their own, but here are three we think the world can agree upon. We, and all future generations need:
- an intelligent alternative to weaponry to settle our national and religious disputes,
- a long term, completely sustainable relationship with our environment,
- an effective, global response to hunger, poverty, illiteracy and all deaths from diseases with known cures.
This sounds like a job for the United Nations. Why not start there?
Creating the United Nation Charter was a noble effort by a prior generation to cooperate globally. It was a step in the right direction and still performs a valuable function. The next step may involve reforming the UN or creating something new. The important point, whatever path we choose, in the end the job is to create an effective global response to the current threats to our personal, national and global security and prosperity.
Is this some new way to promote someone's personal, national, religious or spiritual belief?
Although there may be a thousand different ways to create a world that works for all humans, we have to pick one of them. Supporting the idea of establishing a global cease-fire and holding the global summit also supports the best of our personal, national, religious and spiritual beliefs.
Will we have to give up any national sovereignty?
Yes we will. And so will the citizens of every other nation.
If this is such a great idea, why aren't our current national and religious leaders already talking about it?
The organizational tools we need are not here and once we create them, the importance we place on leadership will diminish. When enough of us let them know we want them to cooperate as equals on creating an intelligently designed world for future generations, they will. On this one, our leaders will follow.
What makes you think that a small group of ten, a hundred, a thousand or even a million individuals, can really change anything?
Margaret Mead, a well-respected global thinker once said, "Never doubt that a small group of dedicated individuals can change the world, indeed it's the only thing that ever has." We agree.
